Reproductive Trauma

Healing for the Wounds We Don’t Always See

Reproductive experiences can shape our lives in powerful and deeply emotional ways. When those experiences include pain, loss, confusion or betrayal—whether physical, emotional or spiritual—the impact can linger, silently shaping how we see ourselves, our bodies and our future.

At Tranquil Awakenings Counseling & Consultation, we offer Reproductive Trauma Counseling to support individuals and families navigating the grief, isolation and complex emotions that can follow events such as miscarriage, infertility, abortion, birth trauma or postpartum mental health struggles. We know these experiences are often minimized or misunderstood—even by those closest to you. Our goal is to provide a space where your story is held with compassion, where your pain is acknowledged and where healing can begin on your terms.

Healing for the Wounds We Don’t Always See
What is Reproductive Trauma?

What is Reproductive Trauma?

Reproductive trauma refers to the emotional and psychological impact of distressing reproductive experiences. This can include but is not limited to:

  • Infertility and failed fertility treatments
  • Miscarriage, stillbirth or neonatal loss
  • Termination of pregnancy (elective or medical)
  • Traumatic labor, delivery or postpartum experiences
  • Unplanned or unwanted pregnancies
  • Loss of reproductive functioning (e.g. due to hysterectomy or illness)
  • Postpartum depression or anxiety
  • Reproductive coercion or abuse
  • Disconnection from gender identity related to fertility or pregnancy
  • Cultural or religious stigma around reproductive experiences

These events often carry physical, emotional and social consequences—yet they are rarely talked about openly. The result? Many of us internalize shame, confusion or guilt, unsure of where to turn for support.

The Emotional Impact of Reproductive Trauma

The Emotional Impact of Reproductive Trauma

Reproductive trauma affects more than the body—it touches our identity, sense of agency, relationships and worldview. You may be experiencing:

  • Intense or prolonged grief
  • Guilt, shame or self blame
  • Fear of future pregnancies or medical care
  • Anxiety, depression or panic attacks
  • Feeling broken, “less than” or invisible
  • Isolation from friends, family or your partner
  • Anger towards your body, others or medical systems
  • Disconnection from your emotions, body or sense of self
  • Distress triggered by pregnancy announcements, baby showers or doctor visits.
  • You don’t need to “move on,” “be strong,” or “get over it.” You deserve space to feel what you feel—with no judgment and no timeline.
Our Approach

Our Approach

At Tranquil Awakenings, our therapists are trained in trauma-informed, reproductive and perinatal mental health care. We know each person’s experience with reproductive trauma is unique and healing must begin with compassion, curiosity and choice. In therapy we offer:

  • A safe and validating space to share your story at your own pace
  • Processing grief and complex emotions in a gentle way
  • Reconnecting with your body through grounding, mindfulness and somatic practices
  • Addressing beliefs shaped by trauma, such as “I failed” or “I don’t deserve to be a parent”
  • Support for relationships, including couples navigating loss, fertility or birth trauma together
  • Resources and referrals for additional medical or community support

We integrate evidence-based approaches such as trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT), mindfulness, Internal Family Systems (IFS), somatic therapy and attachment-based work—tailored to your individual needs.

Whether your experience is fresh or happened years ago, we’re here to meet you where you are—not where others expect you to be.
