Cognitive & Memory Testing
Our Clinicians
Understand What’s Changing. Identify What’s Needed. Preserve What Matters.
Are you or a loved one experiencing forgetfulness, trouble focusing, or changes in thinking that interfere with daily life? It’s normal to have occasional lapses in memory or attention—but when those issues become frequent, noticeable, or worrisome, cognitive and memory testing can help.
At Tranquil Awakenings Counseling Center, we offer comprehensive, compassionate cognitive and memory evaluations to help individuals and families understand how the brain is working. Whether you’re concerned about early memory loss, attention issues, or changes related to aging or medical conditions, we’re here to guide you with care and clinical precision.
When Is Testing Needed?
You might consider a cognitive or memory evaluation if you or someone you love is experiencing:
- Forgetfulness or losing things more often
- Trouble concentrating or staying organized
- Trouble finding words or following conversations
- Confusion about time, places or routines
- Trouble making decisions or solving problems
- Decline in academic or work performance
- Mood changes or emotional dysregulation with no clear cause
- Family history of dementia, Alzheimer’s or other neurological conditions
These symptoms can come from many sources: aging, ADHD, depression, trauma, chronic illness or early neurocognitive decline. We want to figure out what’s causing the concern and give you meaningful, actionable information.
What We Assess
Our cognitive and memory evaluations are tailored to your concerns, age and history. We may assess:
- Attention and Focus
- Memory (short-term, long-term and working memory)
- Processing Speed
- Language and Verbal Fluency
- Executive Functioning (planning, organization, flexible thinking)
- Visual-Spatial Skills
- Emotional and Behavioral Functioning
We don’t just test how your brain is working, but how those changes are impacting your daily life, relationships, work or education.
Who Can Be Tested?
We test for:
- Adults concerned about early memory loss or cognitive decline
- Older adults and seniors seeking baseline assessments or screening for Alzheimer’s/dementia
- Young adults or professionals having trouble focusing, managing responsibilities or retaining information
- College students having trouble concentrating, learning or time management
- Individuals with a history of brain injury, stroke or medical conditions (such as MS, epilepsy or long COVID)
- Family members or caregivers noticing personality or memory changes in a loved one
- Students or employees seeking accommodations due to cognitive impairment
You don’t have to wait until symptoms are “severe” to get answers—early testing can lead to better planning, support and peace of mind.
What to Expect from the Testing Process
We know cognitive testing can be intimidating, especially if you’re worried about what you’ll find. That’s why we make the experience respectful, collaborative and easy to navigate.
Your evaluation may include:
1. Initial Intake Interview
We gather background information, current concerns, medical history and family history to guide the evaluation process.
2. Standardized Testing
You’ll complete a series of assessments—some computerized, some paper-and-pencil—to measure various areas of cognitive functioning. These are non-invasive, low-stress tasks administered in a calm environment.
3. Emotional & Behavioral Screening
Because mood and cognition are closely linked, we may also screen for depression, anxiety, trauma or stress-related symptoms.
4. Feedback & Recommendations
Once scoring and analysis are complete, we’ll meet with you (and/or your family) to review the results in plain language and provide a detailed report. We’ll also offer customized recommendations for care, support and follow-up.
Our Approach
At Tranquil Awakenings, our evaluations are:
- Holistic: We look at the whole person—not just the test scores—to understand what’s affecting your cognition.
- Supportive: We explain results in a sensitive, respectful way and help you process what they mean for your life.
- Culturally Responsive: We use normed, inclusive tools and take into account your language, education and background.
- Collaborative: If needed, we coordinate with your primary care provider, neurologist, therapist or family.
What Happens After Testing?
Depending on the results, we may recommend:
- Therapy or counseling for emotional or adjustment concerns
- Referrals for medical or neurological evaluation
- Cognitive rehabilitation strategies or memory aids
- Support groups or coaching
- Documentation for academic or workplace accommodations
- Ongoing monitoring or follow-up testing in the future
Testing can give you not only answers but a framework for proactive support. You Matter.
Brain changes and cognitive issues can be overwhelming—but you don’t have to face them alone or in the dark. Knowledge is power. Power is peace of mind.
