School Violence

When a Place of Learning Becomes a Source of Fear, Healing Must Follow

School is supposed to be a place of safety, growth and connection but for many students, teachers and families it can become the site of trauma. From bullying and physical altercations to school shootings and lockdowns, school related violence can leave lasting psychological wounds especially when support is limited or the trauma is minimized.

At Tranquil Awakenings Counseling Center, we provide trauma informed support to children, teens, families and educators affected by school violence. Whether you’ve experienced an isolated incident or ongoing threats to safety in an educational setting, your experience matters and healing is possible.

When a Place of Learning Becomes a Source of Fear, Healing Must Follow

What is School Violence?

School violence is any act of physical, emotional or psychological harm that occurs within a school or educational setting. This includes:

  • Physical assaults or fights
  • Verbal or emotional bullying
  • Cyberbullying
  • Sexual harassment or assault
  • Gun violence or school shootings
  • Threats of violence or exposure to weapons
  • Lockdowns, drills or evacuations
  • Staff abuse or neglect
  • Hate speech or discrimination based on race, gender, religion or identity

Even witnessing violence or being part of a lockdown drill can create trauma symptoms especially for children and teens whose brains are still developing their understanding of safety and trust.

Emotional and Psychological Impact

Violence in schools can shatter a person’s sense of safety and belonging. Survivors may experience:

  • Anxiety, panic or hypervigilance
  • Difficulty sleeping or nightmares
  • Avoidance of school or fear of returning
  • Depression, numbness or emotional shutdown
  • Trouble concentrating or completing schoolwork
  • Irritability, anger or emotional outbursts
  • Withdrawal from friends or family
  • PTSD symptoms such as flashbacks or intrusive thoughts

These symptoms can affect not only academic performance but also long term emotional development and self esteem. No one should have to navigate this alone, especially children and adolescents.

Inclusive, Culturally-Aware Care

At Tranquil Awakenings Counseling Center, we understand that the impact of school violence is not experienced equally. Students of color, LGBTQ+ youth, students with disabilities, immigrants and others from historically marginalized groups often face compounded trauma due to bias, systemic discrimination and unequal access to support. Our team is committed to providing inclusive, affirming and culturally aware care that recognizes and honors each person’s lived experience. We strive to create a space where every individual feels seen, safe and supported in their healing.

Therapy Can Help

Therapy provides a safe and supportive space to:

  • Process fear, grief and trauma
  • Rebuild a sense of safety and control
  • Develop coping skills for anxiety and stress
  • Improve emotional regulation and resilience
  • Restore focus, confidence and trust
  • Support caregivers and educators in their own trauma and response

We work with families and schools (when appropriate) to support recovery while respecting each client’s privacy and comfort level.

You Don’t Have To Carry The Fear

You or your child don’t have to carry the fear or pain of school violence alone. Whether you’re seeking support for yourself, your child or your classroom, we are here to help.
