Physical Abuse & Assault

When the Body Is Harmed, the Mind and Heart Are Wounded Too

Physical abuse and assault leave more than bruises; they leave lasting emotional, psychological and relational scars. Whether the violence happened in childhood, in an intimate relationship, during an assault or at the hands of someone in a position of authority, the pain often goes on long after the harm is over. Survivors may carry fear, shame or hypervigilance long after the danger has passed.

At Tranquil Awakenings Counseling Center, we honor the strength it takes to survive and the courage it takes to heal. Our trauma informed therapists offer a safe, confidential space for individuals who have experienced physical abuse or assault. We help survivors process their trauma, rebuild trust in themselves and others and feel safe in their bodies and in the world.

When the Body Is Harmed, the Mind and Heart Are Wounded Too

What is Physical Abuse or Assault?

Physical abuse is any intentional use of force that causes harm or injury. This may include:

  • Hitting, slapping, punching or kicking
  • Pushing, shoving or restraining
  • Burning, choking or use of weapons
  • Denial of medical care or basic physical needs
  • Physical intimidation or threats of harm

Physical assault can happen during a violent attack, robbery, hate crime, domestic dispute, sexual violence or public incident. No matter the setting or relationship involved the trauma is real and valid.

Survivors of physical abuse or assault are often betrayed by someone they trusted, making recovery emotionally complex and deeply personal.

The Lasting Impact of Physical Abuse

Physical abuse doesn’t just affect the body it changes how a person sees themselves, others and the world around them. Survivors may struggle with:

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Anxiety, panic attacks or hypervigilance
  • Depression or emotional numbness
  • Difficulty trusting others or forming healthy relationships
  • Flashbacks, nightmares or sleep disturbances
  • Shame, self blame or low self worth
  • Body disconnection or fear of touch
  • Feelings of powerlessness or isolation

Some survivors can’t talk about what happened. Others have been silenced, doubted or blamed. At Tranquil Awakenings Counseling Center, your story will be met with care not judgment.

Inclusive, Culturally-Aware Care

We know trauma is not just shaped by events but by identity, culture and context. At Tranquil Awakenings Counseling Center, we offer inclusive and culturally aware therapy that acknowledges the unique experiences of communities of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, immigrants, disabled persons and other marginalized groups. We recognize that systemic inequality, bias in healthcare and legal systems and cultural stigma can all compound the trauma of abuse. We’re committed to creating a space where every individual feels seen, heard and empowered.

You Can Feel Safe Again

Healing from physical abuse and assault is not about forgetting what happened, it’s about reclaiming your voice, your body and your sense of safety. You are not alone. And it is never too late to start.
