Domestic Violence

You Are Not Alone. You Are Not to Blame. You Deserve Safety and Healing.

Domestic violence and relationship abuse can happen to anyone regardless of gender, age, income, sexual orientation or background. It doesn’t always leave bruises or scars and it doesn’t always come from someone society would label as “abusive.” But if you’ve ever felt unsafe, silenced or afraid in your relationship, your experience matters. You deserve to be heard and supported.

At Tranquil Awakenings Counseling Center, we offer trauma-informed therapy for survivors of domestic violence and intimate partner abuse. We know how complex, isolating and painful these experiences can be. Whether the abuse is ongoing or part of your past, our therapists provide a safe, confidential space to begin healing at your own pace.

You Are Not Alone. You Are Not to Blame. You Deserve Safety and Healing.

What Is Domestic Violence?

Domestic violence (also known as intimate partner violence, or IPV) is not just physical—it’s a pattern of power and control that can show up in many forms:

  1. Physical Abuse : Hitting, slapping, restraining, shoving or threats of harm
  2. Emotional Abuse : Gaslighting, name-calling, humiliation or manipulation
  3. Verbal Abuse : Yelling, intimidation, threats or put-downs
  4. Sexual Abuse : Coercion, assault or using sex as control or punishment
  5. Financial Abuse : Withholding money, restricting work or sabotaging resources
  6. Digital Abuse : Monitoring messages, stalking or online harassment
  7. Isolation : Cutting off contact with friends, family or support systems

Many survivors describe feeling confused or doubting their own reality especially when the abuse alternates with affection, apologies or denial.

The Psychological Effects of Abuse

Abuse can leave invisible wounds that affect how you see yourself, your relationships and the world around you. Survivors may struggle with:

  • Anxiety, panic or chronic fear
  • Depression, numbness or emotional exhaustion
  • PTSD, flashbacks or nightmares
  • Low self-worth or shame
  • Difficulty trusting others or setting boundaries
  • Confusion about what healthy love looks like
  • Guilt about staying in or leaving the relationship
  • Feeling isolated, unsafe or emotionally overwhelmed

These are normal responses to abnormal and often traumatic situations. You are not “overreacting.” You’re doing your best to survive something deeply painful.

Our Therapeutic Approach

At Tranquil Awakenings Counseling Center, we honor your experience and empower your voice. In therapy, we help you:

  • Understand the abuse cycle and its emotional impact
  • Rebuild your sense of self, choice and inner safety
  • Process trauma in a way that feels grounding and not re-traumatizing
  • Set and maintain boundaries in relationships
  • Develop tools for emotional regulation and self-care
  • Create a safety plan or connect with community resources (if needed)

We never pressure you to take a certain path whether you’re still in the relationship, recently left or processing past abuse. You are in control of your story and your healing.

Inclusive, Culturally-Aware Care

We understand that domestic violence does not affect everyone equally, and the pathways to safety and healing are not always accessible or safe for all. Individuals from marginalized communities including people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, immigrants, people with disabilities, and those from low-income backgrounds often face additional barriers such as systemic injustice, cultural stigma, legal vulnerability, or fear of being misunderstood. At Tranquil Awakenings, we are committed to providing inclusive, culturally-aware support that respects your identity and honors your lived experience. You are welcome here fully and without exception.

You Deserve Safety. You Deserve Support

Leaving an abusive relationship or healing from past abuse is not easy but you don’t have to go through it alone. At Tranquil Awakenings Counseling Center, we’re here to guide you, support you and provide a space for you to start healing.
