Victim or Witness to Community Violence

When Safety Is Shaken, Healing Begins With Support

Community violence like shootings, gang activity, physical assaults or other harm in public spaces can be devastating. Whether you were directly harmed or witnessed the violence around you the emotional aftermath can linger in the form of fear, grief, anger and trauma.

At Tranquil Awakenings Counseling Center, we know that exposure to community violence affects individuals, families and entire neighborhoods. It disrupts our sense of safety, trust and connection to the world around us. You don’t have to carry this alone, support, understanding and healing is available.

When Safety Is Shaken, Healing Begins With Support

What Is Community Violence?

Community violence is interpersonal violence that occurs in neighborhoods, schools or other public areas. It often includes:

  • Shootings or stabbings
  • Gang related violence or retaliation
  • Assaults or physical altercations in public
  • Domestic violence witnessed by others in the community
  • Hate crimes or identity based attacks
  • Mass shootings or acts of terrorism
  • Police brutality or state sanctioned violence

Community violence can be sudden and random or part of an ongoing pattern. People of all ages including children and teens can be deeply affected whether they were direct victims, witnesses or indirectly exposed through news, social media or the stories of others.

Emotional and Psychological Impact

Exposure to community violence can leave people feeling:

  • Unsafe in familiar places
  • Hypervigilant or anxious
  • Angry, numb or emotionally overwhelmed
  • Disconnected from others or withdrawn
  • Distrustful of people or systems
  • Helpless or hopeless about the future
  • Trapped in cycles of grief especially after repeated exposure
  • Guilt for surviving or witnessing without intervening

Children and adolescents are especially vulnerable as their nervous systems are still developing. Without intervention the trauma can lead to long term emotional, behavioral and academic challenges.

Inclusive, Culturally-Aware Care

At Tranquil Awakenings Counseling Center, we know that community violence often intersects with systemic injustice. Black and brown communities, LGBTQ+ individuals, immigrants and those living in under-resourced neighborhoods are disproportionately affected—not only by violence but also by unequal access to safety, justice and mental health care. Our team provides inclusive, culturally-aware therapy that acknowledges the role of systemic trauma and affirms your lived experience. We are here to listen, believe and support you without judgment or bias.

How Therapy Can Help

Healing from community violence isn’t about “getting over it”, it’s about creating space to process what happened, restore a sense of safety and reconnect with personal power.

In therapy we help clients:

  • Work through trauma responses like fear, grief or anger
  • Learn tools to manage anxiety, hypervigilance or depression
  • Rebuild trust in themselves, others and their environment
  • Process experiences of injustice, betrayal or helplessness
  • Strengthen emotional resilience and self-advocacy
  • Support children and teens in developmentally appropriate ways

We tailor our trauma informed care to your individual needs and offer a confidential space to start your healing journey.
