Military Trauma

Serving Was Just One Chapter, Healing Is the Next

Military service can be full of pride, purpose and sacrifice but for many veterans and active duty service members it also comes with experiences that leave deep emotional and psychological wounds. Exposure to combat, life threatening situations, traumatic loss, moral injury and institutional stress can all contribute to what is commonly known as military trauma.

At Tranquil Awakenings Counseling Center, we understand that military trauma is complex, personal and often hard to talk about. Whether you’re recently discharged or have been out of service for years we offer a safe and supportive space where you can explore what you’ve carried and begin the process of healing with dignity and respect.

What Is Military Trauma?

Military trauma is any psychological or emotional distress experienced during or as a result of military service. It may be caused by:

  • Combat exposure and life threatening events
  • Witnessing injury or death of fellow service members
  • Surviving attacks, blasts or ambushes
  • Military sexual trauma (MST)
  • Feeling guilty over actions taken or not taken in high stakes environments
  • Prolonged separation from loved ones or reintegration challenges
  • Institutional betrayal, harassment or racism within the military system

These experiences can lead to post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), moral injury, anxiety, depression and significant challenges with trust, sleep, mood regulation and personal relationships.

The Effects of Military Trauma

The effects of military trauma are not always immediate and they don’t fade just because service has ended. Common symptoms include:

  • Flashbacks, nightmares or intrusive memories
  • Hypervigilance or exaggerated startle response
  • Anger, irritability or emotional numbness
  • Difficulty sleeping or concentrating
  • Feelings of guilt, shame or regret
  • Isolation from family or loved ones
  • Loss of purpose or identity after service
  • Substance use as a coping strategy
  • Avoidance of crowds, loud noises or reminders of service

These symptoms can deeply impact daily functioning, relationships and quality of life. But they are not signs of weakness, they are signs of survival.

Inclusive, Culturally-Aware Care

We know not all service members and veterans have the same experience of military culture or trauma. Veterans of color, LGBTQ+ service members, women, immigrants and disabled veterans often face additional challenges including discrimination, isolation and systemic barriers during and after service.

At Tranquil Awakenings Counseling Center, we are committed to inclusive, culturally responsive care that affirms your identity, honors your sacrifice and meets you where you are. You won’t have to justify your story or minimize your experience to get support here.
