Family Therapy

Your Path to Healing Begins Here

Every family has its own rhythm—a unique blend of personalities, values, history and emotional dynamics. While this diversity is part of what makes families special, it can also lead to conflict, misunderstanding and disconnection. Whether you’re facing a specific challenge or just struggling to navigate everyday life together, family therapy is the way forward—one built on communication, respect and shared healing.

At Tranquil Awakenings Counseling Center, we believe families are systems. When one member struggles, the whole unit is impacted. And when the family grows together, every individual benefits. Our family therapy is designed to help you reconnect, repair and realign—so home feels like a safe place, not a stressful place.

What is Family Therapy?

What is Family Therapy?

Family therapy is a form of counseling where multiple members of a family meet with a trained therapist to explore their relationships, identify unhealthy patterns and improve communication. Sessions can include all family members, specific subgroups (like parents and children) or shift depending on the issue being addressed.

It’s not about assigning blame—it’s about understanding each person’s perspective, reducing conflict and creating healthier ways of relating to each other.

What Happens in a Family Therapy Session?

Family therapy is a collaborative process. Our Bloomfield Hills family therapists are trained to create a safe space where each family member can share openly and feel heard—without judgment, interruption or fear of being misunderstood.

During sessions your therapist may help the family:

  • Explore each person’s role and perspective within the family dynamic
  • Identify patterns of communication or behavior that cause tension
  • Practice active listening and more effective expression of thoughts and emotions
  • Develop healthy boundaries and respectful conflict resolution strategies
  • Support shared decision making and collective problem solving
  • Rebuild trust and emotional safety within the family system

We may also meet with certain family members individually depending on the situation. The focus remains on the family as a whole—even when working in smaller parts.

Common Reasons Families Seek Therapy

Common Reasons Families Seek Therapy

Every family is different, but some of the most common reasons people seek family therapy include:

  • Communication Breakdown Frequent arguments, passive-aggressive behavior or avoidance
  • Parent-Child Conflict Power struggles, behavioral concerns or emotional distance
  • Blended Family Adjustment Navigating step-parenting, co-parenting or merging households
  • Grief or Loss Processing the death of a loved one or other major life change
  • Divorce or Separation Helping children adjust, managing co-parent dynamics
  • Mental Health Concerns Supporting a family member with anxiety, depression, ADHD or substance use
  • Major Transitions Relocation, job loss, adolescence, launching a young adult or caregiving for elders
  • Trauma Healing from abuse, violence or generational trauma
  • Cultural or Intergenerational Differences Navigating values, roles and expectations across generations

Family therapy can also be helpful when things feel “off” and no one can quite explain why. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit.
