Emotional Abuse

Unseen Wounds. Real Pain. True Healing.

Emotional abuse is invisible to others but its effects can be just as harmful and long lasting as physical violence. It erodes your self esteem, distorts your reality and creates an environment of fear, control and confusion. Whether it happens in a romantic relationship, family, workplace or friendship emotional abuse leaves deep scars that need to be acknowledged and healed.

At Tranquil Awakenings Counseling Center we understand emotional abuse is complex and often hard to name. Many survivors doubt their experiences, blame themselves or feel pressured to “just move on”. Our trauma informed therapists are here to help you process what you’ve been through, rebuild your confidence and reclaim your sense of worth and safety.

What Is Emotional Abuse?

Emotional abuse is repeated behaviors intended to manipulate, control, belittle or isolate someone. Unlike physical abuse emotional abuse doesn’t always leave visible marks but it can leave a deep imprint on your emotional well being.

Common forms of emotional abuse include:

  1. Gaslighting : Making you doubt your memory, perception or sanity
  2. Criticism and Belittling : Constantly pointing out flaws or minimizing your achievements
  3. Blame-Shifting : Making you feel responsible for everything that goes wrong
  4. Silent Treatment or Withholding Affection : Used as punishment or control
  5. Threats and Intimidation : Implying consequences for asserting needs or boundaries
  6. Isolation : Cutting you off from friends, family or support systems
  7. Jealousy or Possessiveness : Disguised as “love” but rooted in control
  8. Mood Unpredictability : Walking on eggshells due to explosive or inconsistent behavior

These patterns develop gradually so it’s hard to recognize what’s happening especially when the abuser alternates between charm and cruelty.

The Impact of Emotional Abuse

Emotional abuse affects how you think, feel and relate to others. Survivors often struggle with:

  • Anxiety or depression
  • Chronic self doubt or guilt
  • Low self esteem and self worth
  • Difficulty trusting others or forming healthy relationships Low self-worth or shame
  • Fear of speaking up or expressing needs
  • Emotional numbness or detachment
  • Confusion about what’s “normal” in relationships

You may feel like you’ve lost yourself or you’re constantly apologizing for who you are. These are not personality flaws. They’re trauma responses.
