Child Abuse

Understanding Child Abuse

Breaking the Silence. Supporting Healing. Restoring Safety.

Child abuse is one of the most painful and long lasting forms of trauma. It can affect every part of a child’s development, emotional, physical, psychological and relational. And even after the abuse has stopped the imprint it leaves behind can last well into adulthood. Whether you are a survivor of child abuse or a caregiver seeking support for a child, healing is possible and you don’t have to do it alone.

At Tranquil Awakenings Counseling Center, we provide a safe, supportive space for survivors of all ages to begin processing what they’ve experienced and reclaim a sense of safety, identity and self worth. Our trauma informed therapists understand the deep and complex wounds that child abuse can create and we approach every client with compassion, care and respect.

Understanding Child Abuse

Types of Child Abuse

Abuse can take many forms and each can be equally damaging to a child’s sense of safety and trust:

  1. Physical Abuse: Hitting, shaking, burning or inflicting harm in any way that causes pain or injury.
  2. Emotional Abuse : Verbal assaults, humiliation, threats, rejection or manipulation that undermines a child’s sense of self.
  3. Sexual Abuse : Any sexual activity with a child, including touching, exposure, exploitation or coercion.
  4. Neglect : Failing to meet a child’s basic needs such as food, shelter, medical care, education or emotional support
  5. Witnessing Domestic Violence : Even when a child isn’t the direct target, exposure to violence in the home is a form of trauma that can be deeply harmful.

Sometimes the abuse is obvious. Other times it’s hidden beneath secrecy, silence or grooming. In every case the impact is real and deserving of care.

Long Term Effects of Childhood Trauma

Child abuse can disrupt normal emotional development and create deep, lasting wounds. Survivors may experience:

  • Anxiety, depression or chronic fear
  • Difficulty trusting others or forming relationships
  • Low self esteem or intense self criticism
  • Emotional numbness or dissociation
  • Guilt, shame or self blame
  • Trouble regulating emotions or coping with stress
  • Reenacting trauma in adult relationships
  • Feeling unsafe even in non threatening situations

Children may not always have the words to describe what they’re feeling but their behavior, emotions and sense of self often reflect their inner struggles.

Therapy Can Help

Healing from child abuse is not about “just getting over it”. It’s about creating space to feel, to be believed and to rebuild what was taken for safety, trust, connection and confidence.

At Tranquil Awakenings Counseling Center, we offer

  • Trauma informed individual therapy for adult survivors
  • Developmentally appropriate therapy for children and teens
  • Play therapy, expressive arts and mindfulness for younger clients
  • Psychoeducation and support for caregivers navigating the aftermath of abuse
  • Tools for emotional regulation, boundary setting and self compassion

Our therapists meet each client with patience, empathy and a deep respect for the pace of healing.

Inclusive, Culturally-Aware Care

We recognize that child abuse affects individuals and families from every background—but the impact is often shaped by identity, culture, and systemic inequity. Communities of color, LGBTQ+ youth, children with disabilities, and those from immigrant or low-income households may face barriers to safety, support, or justice, and may experience additional trauma when abuse is ignored, minimized, or mishandled by institutions. At Tranquil Awakenings, we are committed to providing inclusive, affirming care that honors your lived experience and embraces every child and family with cultural sensitivity, dignity, and unwavering support.

You Are Not Alone

Whether your experience is recent or something you’ve carried for years, know this: you are not to blame. You are not broken. And you are not alone.

At Tranquil Awakenings Counseling Center we’re here to support your journey toward healing with care, without judgment and always at your pace.
